Brief Description:
An ancient language of Southeastern Italy, spoken along the Adriatic coast. It was the language of the three Iapygian tribes, the Messapi, Daunii, and Peucetti, (called Apuli, Calabri and Salentini by the Romans). Once believed related to Illyrian, the evidence for this is so slender that it is better recognized as an independent Indo-European language, unrelated to Italic. So far about 300 inscriptions have been found. 600-100 BC.
