Brief Description: An extinct Romance language (or group of languages) once spoken in the Dalmatian region of Croatia, and as far south as Montenegro. Dalmatian speakers were localized in Zadar (Jadera), Trogir (Tragur), Split ( Spalatro), Dubrovnik (Raugia, Ragusa) and Kotor (Cattaro). Each of these cities had a local dialect,as did the islands of Krk (Vikla), Cres (Crepsa) and Rab ( Arba). Only the Ragusan and Vegliote (Krk) dialects have left records, of which the Vegliote -- published by the Italian scholar Matteo Giulio Bartoli in 1906 -- is the most substantial. The last speaker died in 1898 AD.
