Brief Description:
"Nass-Gitksan, the more northerly of the two branches of the Tsimshianic language family of northwestern British Columbia, consists of two emergent languages. (1) Nisga'a (Hisgha) is spoken in four village communities along the Nass River and has between 400 and 500 speakers, with no first-language speakers under 30. (2) Gitksan is spoken in six village communities along the Skeena River upriver from the Coast Tsimshians. It has about the same number of speakers as Nisga'a (400 to 500), but there are a small number of families in which children and young people are fluent speakers."
