Brief Description:
Mator was spoken in the northern region of the Sayan Mountains in Siberia, close to the northern border of Mongolia, along the Yenisei River to Lake Baikal. It should not be confused with the ethnonym Mator, which is one of the alternate names of the Koibal people. Knowledge of Mator comes mostly from 18th and 19th century Russian and German philologists, such as Messerschmidt, Mueller, Pallas and Spaski. The Mator had close contacts with Turkic and Mongol peoples, and it thus shows considerable influence from them. The language preserved numerous archaic features of the Samoyedic branch of Uralic, and of and Uralic itself. Until c. 1840 AD.
