Brief Description:
An extinct language spoken on the Shetland and Orkney Islands and in the Scottish county of Caithness. The only written records of the language are a version of the Lord's Prayer and a ballad. It was probably fairly similar to Faroese. The last reports of Norn speakers are from the 19th century, but the language may have died out in the late 18th. Memorized fragments of the language remained in remote areas until the late 19th century.
