An ancient language of southern and south-central Italy. It was quite widely spoken, and was the language of the Sabellians, or Samnites. Over 200 texts exist, the best-known of which are the Tabula Bantina (ca 125 BC), the Bronze Tablet from Agnone (ca. 250 BC) and the Cippus Abellanus (ca 150 BC). The language is mostly written in a native alphabet, derived through Etruscan from West Greek. 500 BC - 50 BC.
