Brief Description: An ancient language of S. Iraq. Probably the first written language.the language of ancient Sumer, spoken in southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), since at least the 4th millennium BC. During the 3rd millennium BC, Akkadian borrowed heavily from this language, as well as converging with it syntactically, morphologically, and phonologically. The language continued to be used as a sacred, ceremonial, literary and scientific language until the 1st century AD.
