Alternate Name: Tonkawa
Spoken in: USA
Code: tqw
Code Standard: ISO 639-3
Documentation: SIL
Brief Description: "Tonkawa was spoken in the eighteenth century at San Gabriel Mission, between Austin and Waco in east-central Texas, and apparently by some other groups in that region. After a tangled relationship with whites and other Indians in the first half of the nineteenth century, the Tonkawas were removed to Oklahoma, ultimately to a reservation in Kay County. The tribe currently has a membership of less than 200, none of whom speak the language. Tonkawa is attested in three nineteenth century vocabularies, but was mainly documented by Hoijer's extensive fieldwork with one of the last fluent speakers in 1928-9. Tonkawa is considered an isolate." Victor Golla, Atlas of the World's Languages 2007 pg. 24
