Brief Description:
An extinct Native American language of Oregon and Washington. Survived until 1930s.
"Cayuse was spoken in the early nineteenth century in the plateau region of northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. It is an isolate; an earlier classification that linked Molala (now considered Plateau (also called Plateau Penutian)) and Cayuse in the 'Waiilatpuan' family has been abandoned. By 1850 the remnants of the Cayuse had settled among the Nez Perce and the Umatillas, where the Cayuse fell out of use. A few people retained some fluency in the language as late as the early 1930s, but Cayuse was totally extinct by the 1960s." Victor Golla, Atlas of the World's Languages 2007 pg. 12
